Toronto Raptors Trade Jermaine O’Neal To Miami Heat For Shawn Marion (4-Player Deal)

It was only a matter of time before Shawn Marion was sent packing.

The Heat traded Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks earlier today for Toronto’s Jermaine O’Neal and Jamario Moon. The Heat gain a center that better fits their style while the Raptors bring in Marion who will make for a more ‘flexible’ frontcourt in Toronto. But don’t expect O’Neal and his rubber knees to be in Miami for long.

Miami did this trade with the future in mind. O’Neal is to make $23 million next season in the final year of his contract. The Heat will then (if all goes to plan) re-sign Dwyane Wade and bring in another big-time free agent such as Amare Stoudemire or Chris Bosh.

Miami is a desirable place to play. Nice weather, sweet beaches, Pat Riley, Dwyane Wade, no state income tax, etc. I believe that if the Heat make a splash in the free-agent market come 2010, they’ll be playing for a legitimate title shot by 2011. We all know what Wade can do with a solid big man (see: Shaq).

But we must not forget that Mr. Wade needs to buckle down. According to a former friend, Wade has been “shady” on numerous business deals and he has hosted numerous “orgy parties” in a flat that the friend has rented out to him. Perhaps Miami is just a little too fun for Dwyane and the gang.

At the end of the day, if Miami finishes out the master plan in 2010, the Heat made out in this trade. Shawn Marion is a great player, electrifying, but Miami is doing what’s best for their FUTURE. And by the way, Miami will also receive a future conditional first-round pick…not too shabby.
