The 2009 Academy Awards was very entertaining and Hugh Jackman was an awesome host. In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap of the award winners you should know before you enter the work-office gossip:

Best Picture: “Slumdog Millionaire” – No surprise here, it was a “Slumdog” night. The film not only won Best Picture but also seven other awards including Best Directing by Danny Boyle. Awesome movie and well-deserving of all its awards.

Best Actor: Sean Penn in “Milk” – You either love him or hate him. I, personally, can’t stand Sean Penn OFF the screen. I liked him in Mystic River and that’s about it. I thought the award should have gone to Mickey Rourke for “The Wrestler” just because of his overall career resurrection but I suppose that’s not what the award is all about. Upon accepting the award, Penn said, “You commie, homo-loving sons of guns! I did not expect this and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often.”

Best Actress: Kate Winslet in “The Reader” – This was almost a guaranteed bronze dude for Winslet. She has been taking these award shows and their trophies by storm lately. She was up against some tough ladies but she deserved to win. To see Kate’s acceptance speech, watch the media clip above. The clip includes the entire “Best Actress” presenation, skip to 5:00 to view Kate’s actual speech.

Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” – I haven’t seen the film but I assume it was pretty good, it’s gotten a bunch of rave from critics. Penelope looked great…that’s all I got.

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight” – It’s what we all wanted, not because Ledger has since passed away but because he thoroughly deserved the award. When Ledger’s name was announced, the crowd rose in a standing ovation and his family accepted the award on his behalf. His father, mother, and sister all had short speeches that thanked everyone for giving Ledger the opportunity.
