And That’s Our Final Offer: What Happens To LaDainian Tomlinson?

The San Diego Chargers have announced that they have laid their final offer on the table for their future Hall of Fame running back, LaDainian Tomlinson.

LT is due to make $24 million by 2011 but the Chargers have offered him a restructured contract of less than the original $24 million in order to clear some cap room. Tomlinson has expressed his desire to stay in San Diego but I find it hard to believe that a player of his caliber will settle for Justin Fargas money.

Many people will tell you that a 30-year-old running back is equivalent to an 85-year-old man, but I would argue that it’s different with a guy like LT. LT is in fact turning 30 this summer and his play last year was below-average due to injuries to his toe, knee, and groin…BUT DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS GUY. There is no way I’m believing that LT turns out like Shaun Alexander – from leading rusher to leading couch potato.

The fun question to ponder is: where will LT end up if he actually does choose to leave San Diego? Drew Brees has expressed on a radio interview that he would love to play with LT again, so I guess New Orleans has to go on the list. But wait, when we’re talking about a guy like LaDainian Tomlinson, I think it’s safe to say that EVERY team would consider adding them to their squad. With that said, it’s easier to make a list of teams that would be less likely to take LT if he were to become available:

  • Minnesota – Adrian Peterson is heading to Canton quickly and Chester Taylor adds a good jab
  • New York – Jacobs and Bradshaw will be there for a while
  • Buffalo – They have Lynch and Fred Jackson who are both young and very talented, plus T.O. is hurting their books this year
  • Carolina – Williams and Stewart are young and have proven to be the future
  • Tennessee – The perfect example of ‘Thunder and Lightning’, LenDale White and Chris Johnson

If your team isn’t on the list then consider yourself a potential home for the All-Pro…
